The Wimbledon seeds have been tumbling in the women’s draw even more rapidly than in the men’s, with last year’s champion Garbine Muguruza the latest casualty.
So who are the women who can still win it? If this crazy Wimbledon continues to disregard the form book, the simple answer is anybody!
But we’ve chosen the six most likely to go all the way in our view, in reverse order.
6/ Jelena Ostapenko
A former French Open champion and Wimbledon quarter-finalist last year, she knows how to win a Slam and she has the talent and aggression to do so on her day.
5/ Karolina Pliskova
The only remaining top eight seed other than Simona Halep, Pliskova may now be starting to fancy her chances of Wimbledon glory. She has tbe class.
4/ Angelique Kerber
A Wimbledon finalist in 2016, beaten only by Serena Williams, and twice a Grand Slam champion, Kerber has the quality and know-how to go all the way this year if she can tap into a rich vein of form.
3/ Venus Williams
Age may be against her but last year’s finalist has won Wimbledon five times before, and she will fight like a tiger to do it one last time while she still can. She has the grace and aggression to pull off the impossible.
2/ Serena Williams
Gradually showing signs that her movement and aim are returning to compliment her awesome serve and all-round power. It would be astonishing if Serena could win Wimbledon so soon after having a baby but if anyone can, she can.
1/ Simona Halep
French Open champion and best in the world right now, Simona must surely believe that she can do that rare double and add Wimbledon to Roland Garros. She has never looked truly comfortable here before. But this could be her time to fulfill her potential on grass.
So that’s our six of the best. Can Alison van Uytvanck make a mockery of her omission after her stunning victory over Muguruza? Can Ekaterina Makarova do the same after blasting Caroline Wozniacki out of the tournament? And what about tenth seed Madison Keys? Can she do it for America?
The way things are going, they will all probably be grateful they’re not in our top six. If you’re among the favourites, you often don’t last long at Wimbledon 2018!
