Novak Djokovic Is Preparing For Wimbledon
Locker Room
June 12, 2018
Novak Djokovic only took a few days to shake off his disillusionment, following a surprise exit at Roland Garros. Now he is very much focused on Wimbledon 2018!
The Serb had suggested he might skip the grass court season completely, after he lost his French Open quarter-final to the little-known world number 72, Marco Cecchinato.
But now he is doing everything he can to add to his three Wimbledon titles and complete his steady return to form.
SPECIAL
Novak has accepted a late wild card for the Fever-Tree Championships at the Queen’s Club next week. And he explained exactly why.
‘The atmosphere is always great and I am looking forward to playing in front of the British crowd again.
‘Grass is very special. It is the rarest of surfaces and I’m happy I’ll have the opportunity to compete at this strong tournament, which will also be a great preparation for Wimbledon.’
OPPORTUNITY
Meanwhile Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni believes that the Roland Garros champion can mount a serious challenge for Wimbledon if he recovers well from his exertions in Paris.
‘It’s always hard to play Wimbledon for us,’ Toni told L’Equipe, referring to the extra stress on the knees caused by the low bounce, and the usual fatigue after Roland Garros fortnight.
But on Rafa’s Wimbledon 2018 title chances he added: ‘I believe that if he is physically well, he will have the opportunity. It will not be easy for him, but he can do it.’
GREAT
Since Nadal could not even guarantee he would be back at Roland Garros next year, when he spoke at a post-tournament interview, a final tilt at Wimbledon makes sense.
As suggested by this blog in our report on the Roland Garros final, Rafa is clearly weighing up when it might be best to retire.
He knows that time and opportunities at the top could be limited. So why forsake Wimbledon, when he is in such great form and has as good a chance as anyone?
ENCOURAGEMENT
Nadal’s body will give him the answers in the next few days. But it sounds as though Rafa’s camp might just give him the encouragement he needs to go for glory at Wimbledon 2018.
