SUPER MUM
But Serena isn’t the only Super Mum tennis has seen. Back in 1980, Evonne Goolagong had the chance to win her second Wimbledon title. By then she had married and taken the name of a little-known British tennis player called Roger Cawley.
But that wasn’t the only big change in Evonne’s life. Three years before that Wimbledon final, she had given birth to her first daughter, Kelly.
Did motherhood make her any less of a tennis player? Of course not!
SHOWPIECE
Evonne Goolagong Cawley beat the formidable Chris Evert Lloyd 6-1, 7-6 in that 1980 showpiece and joined an elite band of mums to have won Wimbledon…the only one since the World Wars!
Blanche Hillyard, Charlotte Sterry and Dorothy Lambert Chamber achieved the feat between 1910 and 1914. Will Serena repeat the achievement this year, for mothers all over the world?

STRIVING
Away from Wimbledon, other mothers have won Slams too. Margaret Court, the woman Serena is striving to catch in the historic Grand Slam race, did so several times.
Her first son, Daniel, was born in 1972. In 1973, she won the Australian Open, The French Open and the US Open. Some hat-trick, although the pace of the game was different then.
In more recent times, we saw the much-loved Kim Clijsters win the 2009 US Open, only eighteen months after the arrival of her daughter Jada. Just in case the toddler wasn’t old enough to remember, Super Mum Kim went out and retained her title at Flushing Meadows in 2010 too!
KEEN
More recently, kindly Kim has been giving advice to a relatively new mum, Victoria Azarenka on how to function as a mother on the tour. The key message? It can be chaos but it works and it’s fun if you stop trying to be perfect!
Talking of chaos, we couldn’t do a feature on tennis super mums without mentioning Wimbledon’s most recognisable mother, could we?
Judy Murray often finds Wimbledon a severe logistical challenge – because she can’t be in two places at the same time!
She wants to watch her most famous son, Andy, play in the singles, of course. But she is equally keen to watch her other Wimbledon title-winning son, Jamie play in the doubles and mixed doubles!
Somehow she manages to be courtside for all her children’s key moments – and no one cheers with greater passion when things go well for her kids!
DESERVE
Yes, to have brought two Wimbledon champions into the world makes Judy one of the greatest mums of them all! But if we’re going down that road, what about Oracene Price – mother of Serena and Venus Williams? What a Super Mum she is!
