Who Is More Romantic? Eugenie or Serena?

Locker Room

February 27, 2017

The tennis romantics have had plenty to consider off the court in the last few months.

And two women players in particular have been hitting the headlines for some interesting developments in their love lives.

Serena Williams got engaged! Some people thought she had always enjoyed some kind of on-off thing with her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

As it turned out, the attractive Serena had been quietly dating Alexis Ohanian, the Reddit co-founder and author, for eighteen months instead.

Then, shortly before the Australian Open, he popped the question – and Serena said yes!

Meanwhile the 23-year-old Eugenie Bouchard agreed to one of the most publicised dates of all time with a student she met through social media (is there any other way for young folk these days?).

Shrewdly, John Goehrke persuaded Bouchard to promise to come on a date if his American Football team, New England Patriots came back from a 28-3 defecit to win the Superbowl. They did!

To her credit, Genie was as good as her word, and the “couple” were photographed at a basketball match in New York a few days later.

The pretty Canadian, Wimbledon finalist in 2014, even claimed she was open to the idea of another date with her young admirer some time soon, after concluding that the date had been “awesome.”

But then internet sleuths claimed Bouchard already had a boyfriend – ice hockey star Jordan Caron.

A tattoo and a pair of swimming shorts belonging to the “mystery man” turned up on Bouchard’s social media account when she revealed an anonymous holiday companion in a deliberately playful photograph. Caron was apparently identified as the owner of both.

What happens next in either of these parallel Bouchard love stories? How real are they? We just don’t know. Is she truly torn between two men? And is she more romantic than Serena?

Let’s face it, Bouchard has given hope to any fan who might take a shine to a female sports star. Yes, you really can go out with one, if you play your cards – or rather your tweets – right.

But what Serena has done is more the real deal. And she even wrote a romantic poem to mark the marriage proposal.

Here it is:

“I came home

A little late

Someone had a bag packed for me

And a carriage awaited

Destination: Rome

To escort me to my very own “charming”

Back to where our stars first collided

And now it was full circle

At the same table we first met by chance

This time he made it not by chance

But by choice

Down on one knee

He said 4 words

And I said yes.”

So right now, we’d have to say that Serena Williams is the most romantic tennis player in the women’s game – much as the whole world loves what Eugenie did.

But could someone else steal Serena’s crown later this year? Maria Sharapova is coming back to tennis in April for a tournament in Stuttgart, Germany. Will she have a new admirer in her entourage?

She was last linked romantically to the Spanish model, Andres Velencoso in May 2016. Remember Andres at Wimbledon a few years back, escorting Kylie Minogue around the players’ lounge and giving reporters the nod to interview the famous singer between matches?

Sharapova was previously involved with Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov, (also linked to Serena at one stage) though sadly Maria’s romance with Grigor didn’t last. Let’s see what happens to the glamorous Sharapova next.

For now, however, Serena Williams remains the real romantic queen of tennis. Eugenie, you have been awesome recently, but we suspect  you were just messin’.
