Murray Through To Face Kyrgios After Two Thrillers
Locker Room
January 25, 2015
Andy Murray has set up a mouth-watering showdown with local hero Nick Kyrgios in the Australian Open quarter-finals.
And the Scot celebrated by revealing that he may wear a kilt with nothing underneath for his wedding to Kim Sears later this year.
For now all eyes will be on the Rod Laver Arena where the atmosphere is sure to be rocking for the most anticipated match of them all here.
TEENAGER NICK HAS NOTHING TO LOSE
Krygios, still only 19, saved a match point before beating Andreas Seppi 5-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) 8-6 in one of the most dramatic comebacks Melbourne Park has ever seen.
He became the first Australian for ten years to reach this stage of his home tournament and now he has nothing to lose.
MURRAY EDGES DIMITROV
Murray looked to be heading into a final set against Grigor Dimitrov too – until he launched a comeback of his own. At 2-5 down in the fourth it seemed likely the Brit would be outgunned when it mattered.
Instead Murray took the next five games to win 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5 and set up the match everyone wants to see.
There was controversy in the eleventh game when Murray claimed he had been distracted while facing a serve he had little chance of returning. Dimitrov had to serve again and couldn’t get much right from that point on, smashing his racquet in fury at the end of the game.
Murray served out the final game with a fortunate match-winning shot that barely dribbled over the net. There were a few boos at the end for the winner – but Andy soon had the crowd laughing.
KILT
Asked whether he would wear a morning suit or a kilt at his wedding, he replied: ‘I’ll keep both options and see what I feel like in the morning but if I wear a kilt it will be a proper kilt of course!’
When pressed to confirm that meant what everyone thought it meant, Murray was only too happy to answer in the affirmative.
Kim Sears looked thrilled in the crowd – though no one was quite sure whether she was beaming because of the victory or the kilt.
MURRAY RECORD
Murray has a 10-0 record against Australians but will have to beat the crowd too if that is going to continue this week. ‘Nick has had an unbelievable tournament and I’ll have to play my best tennis to beat him,’ Andy admitted. ‘He’s dangerous, he’s unpredictable, he’s entertaining, he’s explosive. That 10-0 record against Australians will have to go some time, I just hope it is not in the next couple of days. I’m hoping some will be supporting me against Kyrgios.’
TENNIS LESSONS OF THE DAY
If you’re going to smash your racquet, leave yourself enough time to calm down and get back into the match.
If you’re being booed by an Aussie crowd, start talking about kilts.
If you’re expecting any support at your next match and your name is Andy Murray…think again.
