Radwanska Triumphs in Montreal….At Last!

It took a year…and yet it took only 80 minutes. Agnieszka Radwanska won her first tournament since Seoul in 2013 to delight the whole of Poland. The only shame was that it brought to an end an extraordinary week for the legendary Venus Williams.
Radwanska emerged a 6-4, 6-2 champion having seized the early initiative. She raced to a 4-1 first-set lead to take charge. And even though Williams broke back, she couldn’t make up the deficit or turn the tide in the second.
When all was said and done there was a significant compensation for Venus, however. She earned a place back in the top twenty of women’s tennis, where she has always belonged. And when she looks back, she will still be able to savour that extraordinary semi-finals day in Montreal, when she beat her sister Serena, perhaps for the last time in a competitive arena.
As for Radwanska, the tournament win will come as a massive relief. She had forgotten what it was like to come out on top and now she can approach the US Open with more confidence.
