Caroline Wozniacki continued to put her personal heartbreak behind her with a brave three-set victory over the fiery Camila Giorgi at Eastbourne. And British tennis fans are now hoping for a final between Wozniacki and the improving Heather Watson.
Due to an unfortunate hamstring injury to Petra Kvitova, Watson received a bye into the semi-finals on the other side of the draw. Whatever the eventual outcome on the south coast, Wozniacki and Watson are warming up nicely for Wimbledon.
Almost at the altar by the time she was left by her golfer-boyfriend Rory McIroy, many wondered whether we would see the best of Caroline this summer. But the Polish-Dane showed her strength of character by reaching the Eastbourne semi-finals with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over the big-serving Italian.
At one stage, Giorgi was warned for firing a tennis ball angrily into the Eastbourne crowd. Then a sudden illness, suffered by a spectator on Centre Court, caused a break in the action…and Wozniacki returned even stronger.
Caroline said: ‘It was really tough, but I loved every second of the match and I feel like I’m in good shape so it’s really exciting.’ There was no mention of former fiance Rory. He appears to be history.
But Caroline, the former world number one, is very much back. And even more exciting is the fact that she is close to recapturing her best game.
